Another year of atrocities against laboratory animals
Newly released Home Office Statistics show a shocking increase in the numbers of animals used in experiments in the last year.
3.583 million animals suffered and died in British laboratories, and that is not including those used to give blood or those who died before reaching the labs, which, if included, would push this already disturbingly high figure through the roof.
The statistics were released on 21 July and show just how the Government, scientists and researchers continue to ignore and dismiss the whole issue of whether it is ethical to take any non consenting individual and put them through unimaginable physical and psychological suffering, before also taking their lives.
The shocking data, below, speaks for itself and shows how things will probably get even worse for animals in laboratories as researchers become even more obsessed with experiments involving GM animals, which continue to rise year by year.
• 3.656 million animal experiments carried out in the last year
• 3.583 million animals used
• 39% increase in animal experiments since Labour came to power in 1997
• 14% rise in animal experiments since last year
• 16% rise in experiments on GM animals
• 16% rise in monkey experiments
• 17% rise in cat experiments
• 9% rise in mice experiments
• 82% rise in experiments on amphibians
• 85% rise in fish experiments
• 95% rise in pig experiments
The SPEAK campaign is more determined than ever to continue the fight against these atrocities being carried out on animals, and will continue campaigning against Oxford University’s barbaric animal experiments. Public response to SPEAK information stalls show that despite the efforts of those promoting animal experiments as the only way to cure human illnesses, people are still genuinely outraged that this cruel and outdated form of research is still being carried out in a supposedly civilized society.
For even one animal to be imprisoned in a laboratory and experimented on is a crime, 3.583 million animals is a massacre, and we at SPEAK will not rest while animals continue to be mutilated and killed.
