DAY OF ACTION FOR ANIMALS IN LONDON

Demo Report Saturday 12th December, 2009

On Saturday 12th December, the busiest shopping day of the year, animal rights campaigners descended upon London for a day of protest against animal abuse. Demos took place throughout the day against institutions involved in the exploitation of animals in various forms, including the fur trade, the circus and vivisection, with SPEAK holding a demo to encourage the public to boycott the city of Oxford while its university continues to imprison and abuse non-consenting, living beings in barbaric research projects.

Protesters met for the SPEAK demo at one o’clock by the Statue of Eros in Piccadilly Circus which, despite the cold, wet weather,  was crowded with tourists and shoppers alike, from both the UK and abroad. Having set up their banners and placards on the steps surrounding the statue, they wasted no time in attracting the attention of those passing by, using the megaphone to inform people of why they were there and handing leaflets out to the vast number of people who showed an interest in the campaign and who were appalled to hear about the enslavement of animals in the labs of Oxford, shocked to be told that this barbarity still occurs in a supposedly civilised society. As other demos finished, more protesters arrived at the statue, until over thirty were in attendance, all determined to make sure that anyone considering visiting Oxford were armed with the facts about what really goes on behind the city’s ‘Dreaming Spires’, about the horrors that they would not read about in their guide books, or be shown on their walking tours.

SPEAK remains as determined as ever to bring an end to animal exploitation at Oxford University, and to win fundamental rights for ALL animals. We will NEVER give up the fight, and will continue our campaign wherever and whenever we can – until every cage is empty.

If you would like to hold a Boycott Oxford demo in your city or town, to inform the public of the awful truth about the university please contact us for leaflet, posters and anything else we can help you with.
