If ever you needed reminding...

The last week has seen an unprecedented attack on the animal rights movement by the media and this vivisection-obsessed government. What lies behind this isn't any concern for human or animal welfare - it is naked propaganda by this government on behalf of the pharmaceutical and biotech industry.

The bottom line here is profit and academic arrogance. The victims of this blind predjudice must not be forgotten and the fight to win their liberation must never stop. Oxford University and the other apologists for animal torture have paraded themselves in front of an eager media all week. Each time the message emanating from their mouths has been one of "how well the animals in their labs are treated" or "there is no pain involved". These and other choice soundbites mask a much darker reality, a reality that for the animals currently languishing in labs like Huntingdon Life Sciences or university depts at Oxford equals a daily routine of physical and mental abuse and ultimately death on the altar of fraudulent scientific research.

Succesive undercover operations inside labs in Britain and throughout the world catalogue a culture of bullying and abuse that would make the American jailers in Iraq look away. The only thing that stands between vivisectors and human torturers is the law, and the fact that they can hide behind a law that allows sentient beings to be subjected to a daily regime of pain. The suffering and brutality gives testament to the fact that we cannot call our society civilised until this outrage is stopped for good. If you have ever been tempted to believe what you are told then consider some of the following examples.

For 10 months during 2001 an undercover animal welfare worker secretly filmed and recorded researchers as they conducted brain experiments on marmoset monkeys inside Cambridge University. Before these small primates underwent invasive brain surgery they were subjected to 12 weeks of 'SHAPING' or training as it is otherwise known. According to the researches animals could be coerced to behave in the right way by, "KEEPING MISERABLE OR ANGRY ANIMALS IN TEST APPARATUS", "BANG ON THE SHUTTER, BANG ON THE WINDOW" or "PUNISH BAD HABITS BY LOWERING THE SHUTTER... IF NECESSARY ONTO THEIR FINGERS", other options included, " USE FOOD RESTRICTIONS TO MAKE THE MARMOSETS MORE AMENABLE TO SHAPING".

Full details of this investigation are available here: http://www.buav.org/zerooption/

Of course we are constantly told that these experiments are the cutting edge of medical research and the monkeys inside Cambridge University were being deliberately brain damaged to find cures for human neurological disorders. One brain-damaged marmoset had sticky labels stuck over its legs and arms and researchers watched on as the bewildered individual tried to pull them off. Inside the dept of Experimental Psychology at Oxford University, so-called scientists deliberately damaged the brains of two rhesus macaque monkeys when they were just 5 years old. Some 10 years later, these sentient beings were still being used in utterly pointless experiments to test their reactions to visual stimuli. One researcher at Cambridge described his work in this way "IT'S GOOD FUN TO GET THEM TO DO DIFFERENT TASKS & TO SET UP DIFFERENT TASKS".

Oxford University has tried to claim that the half-built lab on South Parks Rd is a "state of the art animal house". In reality it is a vivisection lab and it is dedicated to filling the pockets of the drugs companies and the egos of pseudo-scientists and academics. The recent attack on the animal rights movement from the Government and its friends in the media will do nothing to hide the real truth about vivisection. Oxford University and those involved in building the new lab cannot hide behind lies and deceit. Your hands are stained with the blood and suffering of countless millions of animals and we won't stand by and let thousands more fill your new torture lab.

STOP THE OXFORD ANIMAL LAB.
