HERE IS WHY YOU MUST SIGN THIS IMPORTANT PETITION:

On Friday November 12th 2004 an article appeared in The Times newspaper entitled "Oxford inquiry on abuse of monkey". The news item told how Thames Valley Police had investigated an allegation of abuse to a monkey inside one of Oxford University's animal labs. The report that followed showed only too clearly exactly what the life of a laboratory animal means to those abusing it and those supposedly charged with the animal's welfare. We are constantly told by Oxford University and all those who claim to be involved in the 'care' or 'use' of lab animals that the animals are well cared for and that they are shown respect or more tellingly that "no animal is made to suffer". Some vivisectors use terms like "our animals have the life of Riley" or "it causes them no pain or stress" - this language is designed to paint a picture that is a long way from the disturbing reality.

The report in The Times states that the university vet wanted this particular monkey "put out of its misery" after it was realised this creature was suffering unnecessarily. The university refused this initial request on the grounds that the monkey was "an asset". This individual creature is stripped of any recognition of his or her ability to feel pain, distress or fear because as far as the university vivisectors are concerned, the monkey is merely an asset, much the same way as the laboratory bench is or any other inanimate object in the lab. This animal and all the others inside Oxford University's vivisection labs have been reduced to mere tools in the academic mind set and this recent expose only serves to show just how divorced the minds of the vivisectors are from the suffering they inflict daily on sentient feeling animals.

According to The Times it was a Home Office inspector who eventually ordered this poor creature to be put down. Although a file was sent to the CPS in relation to this incident it was decided that there were insufficient grounds to proceed with a prosecution. Of course there would not be sufficient grounds because as usual the cosy world of academic animal abuse has closed ranks with those served with supposedly protecting laboratory animals.

For all those involved in the dark world of animal experimentation, the need to debase the animals they torment to mere assets remains a central pillar of the vivisection defence. What is even more disturbing about this attitude is the knowledge that some three hundred years after Descarte first described animals as 'machines' and incapable of any feeling, Oxford University vivisectors are still adopting the same shameful and discredited attitude. This is the same university that in March of this year told the Oxford Mail that the building site on South Parks Road was to be an "Animal Hotel" and that "No animal experiments would carried out there." They also stated that there would be no primates in the building. Since that initial statement they have now admitted that in fact the new site would be a vivisection lab and that primates would be amongst the animals used. In recent weeks a leading Professor at the university has told the Oxford Mail that the new building would house "colonies of monkeys".

The fate of the monkey in The Times exposé is a snapshot into the world of animal abuse at Oxford University. The disgraceful attitude of all those concerned with this incident is yet another example of what it really means to be a defenceless being at the hands of blind prejudice and arrogance. For this individual it is too late but for all those who are suffering and would suffer inside the barren concrete walls of the half built lab on South Parks Rd we must never turn our backs on them.

Please help us to stop this project once and for all. Everybody can play their part in bringing to an end any plans Oxford University ever had in building the new lab in South Parks Road. Click on the link below and sign the petition, then forward it to friends and relatives and ask them to do the same. Let us show Oxford University that they cannot hide their barbarism from us and that compassionate people from around the world are demanding they stop their outdated practices immediately.
